Hiphop artist Samuel Frimpong, also known as Medikal, has been detained in prison for five days.
On the artiste’s first appearance in court for brandishing a weapon, a Circuit Court judge in Accra ruled on October 22, 2021.
Medikal, who was charged with displaying arms and ammunition, pleaded not guilty.
At the hearing on Friday, Emmanuel Yeboah Gyan’s counsel asked the court to grant his client release because he is a law-abiding citizen with relatives on standby to meet the bail terms.
The prosecution, however, contested the plea, stating that Medikal’s individual right to bail is subservient to the community interest, which should be protected. He also said that elements of the case are still being investigated.
The prosecution stated in the case statement that the accused is a well-known musician. In the month of September 2021, while driving in his automobile, the accused flashed a Ruger 9mm pistol and posted a video on his Snapchat social media platform.
“On September 26, 2021, a video of the weapon he presented on Snapchat became viral, and “Adomonline published it. On October 21, 2021, the police apprehended the accused based on intelligence and turned him over to the Regional Criminal Investigations Department for inquiry. In his investigative caution statement, the accused admitted to the offense.
“Following an investigation, the accused was charged with the crime and arraigned before the Court,” the prosecution stated.
Emmanuel Esandoh, the presiding judge, concurred with the prosecution and sent Medikal to the Ankaful prisons in the Central Region for five days.
This comes only a day after Shatta Wale and four other persons were remanded in prison following an alleged gun attack that turned out to be a fraud. Shatta Wale is now incarcerated at the Ankaful Prison in the Central Region.
During their initial appearance in court on Thursday, October 21, 2021, they were remanded by an Accra Circuit Court.
Medikal was to the courthouse to support Shatta Wale.
Shatta Wale was apprehended by police for circulating false information regarding an assassination attempt on October 19, 2021 at his apartment in Accra.
