KNUST and Legon (UG) were also ranked 587th and 916th in the world, respectively, based on their research performance and ratings by members of the academic community worldwide. KNUST received a global score of 49.9 and was ranked 484th in Social Sciences and Public Health.
It also ranked 277th in Clinical Medicine, with a total score of 56.2. The University of Ghana, on the other hand, received a global score of 41.4 in the eighth annual USNews and World Report Global Universities Rankings.
It did, however, outperform KNUST in Social Sciences and Public Health, with an overall point total of 41.6, placing it 326th in the world. UG was ranked 566th in the field of Clinical Medicine, trailing its Kumasi-based competitor.
None of Ghana’s public universities made the top ten list. Meanwhile, the rankings did not include the University of Cape Coast (UCC), the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), and other tertiary institutions.
In the 2022 Times Higher Education annual rankings, the University of Cape Coast was ranked first in Ghana, first in West Africa, and one of the top five universities in Africa.
Other indicators considered in the eighth annual USNews and World Report Global Universities Rankings included global research reputation, regional research reputation, publications, books, conferences, and the number of publications among the top 10% most cited. The rankings were created to show how universities around the world compare.
“Because an increasing number of students intend to enroll in universities outside of their home country, the Best Global Universities rankings – which focus specifically on schools’ academic research and reputation overall, rather than their separate undergraduate or graduate programs – can help those applicants accurately compare institutions around the world,” the USNews explained.
South Africa’s University of Cape Town has been ranked first and best in Africa, as well as 109th globally.
