After getting a pittance from GHAMRO as royalties, Kofi Donkor, the husband of famed Ghanaian gospel performer Celestine Donkor, has responded bitterly.
Check this, Throughout my 12-year career as a musician, I’ve never received royalties – Guru
Celestine Donkor received GH390.40 in royalties from her songs for the year from the Ghana Music Rights Organization.
Mr Kofi Donkor criticized the fact that an artist would earn such a pitiful sum of royalties from GHAMRO after many hours of labour and airplay, in a Facebook post.
He believed it was unethical for artists to collect such large royalties, especially since they had to invest more money, devote more time to their trade, and laboriously develop music.
His post was also a rallying cry for industry participants to fight back against the royalties they get from GHAMRO.
We must do everything necessary to get the buildings up and running so that such insults would become obsolete!
What a disgrace!
Owners of Music Rights, wake up!!
It’s time to stop!!

In recent years, the inconsistencies in GHAMRO’s royalties, as well as the peanuts they provide to artists, have been a hot subject. Many artists have voiced their dissatisfaction with the situation and demanded reform.
GHAMRO has also attempted to methodically explain why royalties are so low, citing factors such as inadequate monetization, among other things.
Meanwhile, musicians have been instructed to upload their tracks to large streaming services, where they may expect to make the most money.
