At a brief ceremony in Accra yesterday, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, who is the Ministry of Energy presented a large consignment of various LED bulbs to some public universities. The presentation was in response to a request from vice-chancellors of public universities for help in providing light to their campuses in order to facilitate learning activities and improve security.
Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh said that “7,571 15-watt (W) LED street lights, 12,801 13-watt LED bulbs, 10,720 nine-watt LED bulbs, and 7,820 six-watt LED bulbs made up the shipment”.
Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Minister of Energy, who presented the bulbs, explained that the recipients had asked the ministry to help them light up their respective campuses.
He explained that the government had decided to promote a switch from incandescent and other inefficient lighting systems to LEDs as part of its policy decision to encourage energy efficiency in light of rising electricity costs.
According to Dr Prempeh, the ministry has launched nationwide energy conservation and demand-side management exercise, focusing on homes, light industry, and strategic institutions such as schools, in accordance with the policy direction.
