Grant Wahl, a prominent American soccer writer, died unexpectedly on Friday while covering a game in Qatar for the World Cup, according to his agency.
U.S. Soccer has expressed its “heartbreak” on Wahl’s passing. His wife tweeted that she was “completely shocked” by the U.S. Soccer statement.

The Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy (SC), the organization responsible for hosting the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, has expressed their sympathies to Wahl’s loved ones and the media community at large.
Earlier on Friday, Wahl, a former reporter for Sports Illustrated who now works for the Substack internet publishing platform, tweeted about the Netherlands-Argentina game.

Wahl “looked to experience some form of extreme anxiety at the start of extra time” during the quarterfinal match, according to his agent Tim Scanlan’s.

According to Scanlan, Wahl was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital despite efforts to resuscitate him in the press box.

State Department spokesperson Ned Price tweeted that the agency has been in touch with Wahl’s family.
